We take great pride in delivering value and customer service that is proactive, flexible and respectful… along with superior quality Personal and Business banking products that reflect an in-depth understanding of the region and its people.

At The First, the Maine work ethic really means something. We have the same dedication to our work as you do. We go to work early. We stay late. We’re cheerful and support our neighbors. We’re genuine, responsive, and practical about our business. We’re principled, proactive problem solvers – smart, efficient and truthful. We keep our promises, and do what we say we'll do.

The First may be different from other banks – but we’re the same as you. Real people who want to help you get what you need.

    Our History

    The First History 1852
Initially incorporated as The People's Bank in 1852, our institution was established by several prominent business owners in the twin villages of Damariscotta and Newcastle. The People's Bank was re-chartered by the U.S. Treasury on May 30, 1864 to become The First National Bank of Damariscotta.

    1888
Further up the coast, The First National Bank of Bar Harbor was organized in 1888, also by a group of notable business leaders – a hard-working bank built on strong community values. By 1991, the bank recorded nearly $96,000,000 in total assets; by 2004, First National had seven branches, from Blue Hill to Calais.

    2005
On January 14, 2005, The First National Bank of Damariscotta and The First National Bank of Bar Harbor combined their strong deposit and lending forces into one financial institution, becoming the third largest bank headquartered in Maine, with combined assets of more than $675 million.

With the completion of the merger, our new combined bank adopted a new name: The First. Now nearly 150 years since our modest beginnings, The First still stands strong as an independent bank, while clearly serving a much wider community than the twin villages. Yet local ownership remains as essential to our mission today as it was for the founders doing business along the shores of the Damariscotta River many years ago.

Though we have grown substantially through the years, we will always stay committed to the values of community and customer service at our core. We welcome you to visit any of our locations, meet some of our 225 employees, and discover all the ways The First is truly is “a better way to bank.”
